I find that in the beauty/cosmetic industry the food you intake is something that’s rarely talked about, or at least not as much as it is within the fitness and health industry but really it’s part of one big umbrella group. Food can help better your skin just the same as it can make the condition of your skin worse, here’s a really simple guide to find the best foods for your skin. This guide will help you to nourish your skin and give you the essential nutrients to boost your glow!
It’s been a while since I have updated my skin care regime but I was definitely in need of a mix up in my routine. So this time I decided to check out different product ranges before committing myself to a new regime, albeit I ended up mixing product ranges in my quest to find something perfect for my skin type which has been combination as of late.
My skin changes on a near daily basis, I know it sound impossible right?! One day I’ll wake up and it can be dry and tight then the next day I’ll wake up and I’ll have an oily t zone so I found something to cater for these changes…
- A quick, light cleanse with Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser. Apply to face with dry hands using circular movements and hot towel off with Liz Earle Pure Muslin Cloth.
- Apply 4-5 drops of SkinCeuticals Serum 10 Antioxidant to clean, dry skin.
- Apply a 5-10p sized amount of Estee Lauder Anti Oxidant Day Wear Cream to face and decollete.
- Apply SkinCeuticals Ultra Defense Mineral SPF – apply a 20p sized amount to face and neck.
- Double/triple cleanse with Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser by applying to face with dry hands using circular motions and hot towel off with Liz Earle Pure Muslin Cloth.
- Apply 3-4 drops of Advanced Night Repair Serum to face and decollete.
- Apply a small amount of Advanced Night Eye Repair below eyes and pat up to brow bone, following the curve of your eye.
- Apply 5-10p sized amount of Estee Lauder Nightwear Plus Cream to face, neck and decollete.
I should mention that I have recently boosted my skin care further by having 2 x SkinCeuticals Gel Peel spaced 2 weeks apart so I’m still riding the high waves of the effects from this treatment. My skin is brighter, tighter and when my skin settles down I’ve been completely blemish free!

Why do we never talk about ‘normal’ skin? There seems to be so many hints & tips out there for those with ‘problem skin’, ‘oily skin’ & ‘dry skin’ however, normal skin is very rarely talked about, why? Maybe because it is quite rare in the way that the majority of people will have a combination skin type and the belief that you can use any products on your skin which isn’t actually true. Below are of my hints, tips or tricks on how to care for normal skin:
- Always cleanse twice per day with a gentle cleanser. The formula is completely up to you such as you can choose to use a balm, lotion or cream etc, personally I would stay away from foam as it can be quite drying. Such as this one from The Body Shop > Balm.
- Use a face mask once per week, think Papaya or Oatmeal something cleansing but also moisturising. I like the Catastrophe Cosmetic Mask from Lush.
- You should still exfoliate once every 2 weeks which a fine exfoliant.
- Don’t over powder you face, this can clog pores and create dry, flakey patches as well as unexpected breakouts.
- Use cotton pads soaked in rose water on your face and decollate once per day, it feels & smells lovely!
- Use a light serum to keep skin rejuvenated.
- Eye cream/serum is your friend! Even though the skin is normal in condition the thinnest parts of the skin can become dry in cooler weather, lets keep those crows feet at bay!
As the sun shines down on us we tend to take a care free attitude to life, that includes protecting ourselves from harmful sun rays. It’s easy to think that just because it doesn’t feel like your skin is burning, you aren’t causing any damage to your skin but in reality you might be. By following these 5 simple and easy tips you will be able to keep yourself safe in the sun, keep your skin looking and feeling fresh and avoid any pesky summer illness!
Use sunscreen and use it well – I know this sounds like a no brainer but there’s been countless times at the beach when I’ve seen parents slather their children in sunscreen only to use about 20% of the reccommended guideline for themselves.
The rule to follow here is actually quite simple, when in doubt use roughly 1 once of sunscreen for each exposed body part, a little extra if you have tattoos. This is around a shot glass worth or product and half of that for your face. If your worried about having that ‘white effect’ just ensure to apply around 15 minutes before going outside to allow the product to melt into the skin, remember to apply every 2 hours as well.
Grab those sunglasses! – sunglasses are probably my favourite accessory which is great when it comes to summer. Protect your eyes from those harmful UV rays, many people don’t know that aside from providing added protection from migraines and disorientation etc they actually protect you from developing Cataracts too! Look for a pair with UV & UVA protection.
Drink water – again this sounds as though I’m trying to tell you how to suck eggs but I promise you I’m not. I drink SO much water per day, at least 2 litres sometimes more and then juices/hot drinks on top if I have any that day. Water provides such good protection against sunstroke, headaches & helps you out even if you do get sunburn as dehydration increases the risk of this happening!
Stay in the shade – I’m not suggesting you do this all day but definitely between 12.30-3pm. I’m not telling you to go inside if you don’t want to just ensure that you have an umbrella or can find a shady part of the area for a few hours to allow your body to recharge and avoid the dreaded sunstroke.
Take care of yourself – check in with how you are feeling, do you feel too hot? Tired all of a sudden? Pay attention to your body because it will tell you what it needs! Wear appropriate clothing such as loose flowing fabric or at least something to cover your shoulders with.
Something that most people neglect to take into account is that medication can also play a massive factor in keeping yourself safe in the sun, medications such as anti-depressants, beta blockers or sleeping pills etc can make it difficult for your body to regulate tempurature or realise when it’s over heating. Just listen to what your body tells you and stay safe!
Partying in the sun all day long can do some damage too the skin so it’s your job to keep it protected in the best way possible! It’s always best to hydrate fro the side out so make sure you keep topped up not hat all important water, but there are steps you can take to make sure your skin stays perfect throughout the festival months.
It’s vital that you cleanse off your makeup after a day in the sun, this is what will stop those nasty little blemishes appearing under your skin the next morning. If you are camping you probably won’t have the luxuries that you are used to but using a little Micellar Water with some cotton pads all suffice. Just remember to thoroughly cleanse your skin once you are on your home turf.
I love this one from Garnier, you pick a small size up for just £2.00 and it really will from all the makeup and grime off our skin with ease.
For the day time it’s a great added benefit to use a moisturiser that contains SPF like this one from Clarins; the UV Plus Multi Protection is great for festival and travel. It’s light weight, oil free and has an SPF 50, a massive plus with this is that it also protects from environmental stresses. It comes in at £28.00 for 30ml.
For your night time routine it’s important to pick a hydrating moisturiser even if you are oily. Little known fact is that your skin can be oily but still be dehydrated, this cream will allow your skin to restore itself as you sleep and you can wipe off any residue in the morning.
This Super Hydrate Night Cream from Pure is a steal at £13.00. It has a light weight formula with 12 hour hydration, it melts easily into the skin and you will wake up to find rejuvenated skin and a glowing complexion.
Elizabeth Arden’ Pro Triple Protection Lip Balm will get your lips through the dry heat the hopefully come along with festivals! It has an SPF of 30 as well as triple action from antioxidants to help keep lips hydrated and looking plump. For £18.00 this product will last you all through the Summer.
Thermal Spring Water from LaRoche-Posay is perfect for war weather and days in the heat. It’s used for softening the skinned adding hydration but the best past? It won’t disrupt your makeup in the process! Just mist this over your face if you feel your skin becoming tired or tight for instant revival, for just £3.50 I don’t know how you can afford not to try this.
These are my go-to products when I’m having a day skin day or worse, a bad skin week+. The products lists below help my to reduce redness, spots, even out my skin tone and aid to restoring my skin! Remember though the majority of your skin care is all about what you put in your body, not on it.
The great cleanse
First of all to tackle those skin problems, you need a clean surface to start with so I like to use is Cetaphil Cleanser. It can be used by all skin types, it great for those with acne and it doesn’t leave any residue behind!
Next I use a pea sized amount of Bioderma Hydrabio Creme and buff it gently into wet skin. This lightly exfoliates the skin whilst hydrating, it’s also hypoallergenic.
I love using Mask of Magnaminty by Lush. It has great antibacterial properties as well as hydrating as it contains honey, smells wonderful like peppermint. This mask can also be used as an exfoliant instead of Bioderm if you choose to buff the mask off, however I use a hot muslin cloth pressed into the skin to remove the product.
Hydration & protection
For serum when it my skin dry and tired, I like to use Kiehls Hydro Plumping Re-Texturing Concentrate. For some these is a little on the pricey side but I always say that good skin care is really worth investing in. This serum is great for smoothing out texture found in the skin when it can get bumpy and flaky when dry.
Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Day/Night Cream is wonderful, a miracle in a pot. This light weight formula is hydrating and smoothing to the skin with the added bonus of protection, if your skin needs a little extra help then this is the cream for you!
